BRIEF HISTORY
Massage is an ancient healing art that has been practiced in many societies and cultures for over a thousand years by the Greek doctor and father of modern medicine, Hippocrates. According to studies published in JAMA in April 2001, it was found that therapeutic massage might be an effective alternative to conventional medical care for persistent health problems.
Associations such as the American Association of Massage Therapy (AMTA) among others, provide leadership, protect the rights of practitioners, promote ethical practices and educate the general public on this subject. Students are encouraged to learn more about the different professional associations.
